Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Washington State

I often describe Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT for short) as the red-headed step-child of CBT. If you’re not familiar, CBT helps people take a look at how our thoughts and behaviors can impact our feelings and then teaches people to change thoughts and behaviors to lessen painful emotions. This is a very helpful framework for many, but for some of us there’s a key missing ingredient, which is where ACT can come in.

Rather than saying you just need to change your thoughts to change your feelings ACT teaches us that it's a normal part of the human condition to sometimes have negative beliefs and painful emotions, but we can all have a good life anyways. By using a combination of mindfulness skills and techniques from ACT I help my clients to accept their full range of emotions and learn deal with negative beliefs in ways that lessens their impact, helping you to create a rich, full and meaningful life.

ACT is great for those seeking trauma therapy, but are needing to build some coping skills before dealing directly with their past. ACT has also been proven effective for depression, anxiety, chronic pain, burnout and learning to manage life’s ups and downs.
